Dog Stars
Definition
The Dog Stars are prominent fixed stars associated with the celestial dogs: Sirius in Canis Major and Procyon in Canis Minor. Sirius is often called the Dog Star in the singular because it is the brightest star in the night sky. In traditional astrology, both stars have distinct symbolic qualities derived from their constellations, planetary analogies, and historical observation.
Astrological Meaning
Sirius has traditionally been linked with prominence, ambition, honor, intensity, and the possibility of substantial achievement. Procyon is often associated with quick action, resourcefulness, sudden advancement, and results that may require continued effort to sustain. Their influence is usually considered strongest when either star closely conjoins the Sun, Moon, a planet, the Ascendant, or the Midheaven. Interpretations vary according to the contacted planet or angle: a conjunction with the Midheaven may concern reputation, while one involving Mercury may emphasize intellect, speech, or strategy. Very tight orbs are generally preferred in fixed-star work.
Why It Matters
The Dog Stars add a specialized layer to natal and event-chart interpretation, particularly when angular or joined to a luminary. They should not be treated as automatic promises of fame or difficulty. Their symbolism is best weighed alongside planetary condition, house topics, aspects, and the chart’s broader pattern.
