Delineation is the structured interpretation of an astrological chart or one of its components. The term can describe reading a planet, sign, house, aspect, dignity, or other chart factor, as well as combining those factors into a coherent judgment. It is especially common in traditional astrology, where interpretation follows established rules and techniques.

In practice, delineation moves from individual symbols to synthesis. An astrologer might first consider a planet’s essential nature, then assess its sign, house, dignity, aspects, sect, and rulerships. Each factor modifies the others: a planet’s condition may affect how readily its themes are expressed, while its house indicates the life topics most closely involved. The process varies by branch. Natal delineation examines character and life patterns, while horary, electional, and mundane astrology apply different priorities and timing methods.

Why It Matters

Careful delineation helps prevent isolated chart features from being treated as absolute statements. A single placement rarely tells the whole story; context, repetition, and the chart’s overall structure shape interpretation. Understanding delineation also helps readers evaluate astrological claims by asking which techniques support a conclusion.
