Definition

A degree is a unit used to locate a point within the 360-degree circle of an astrological chart. Each of the twelve zodiac signs contains 30 degrees, numbered from 0° through 29°. Degrees can be divided into 60 minutes, and each minute into 60 seconds, allowing astrologers to record planetary positions, angles, and house cusps precisely.

Astrological Meaning

A planet’s degree shows its exact position in a sign and helps determine its relationships with other chart factors. Degrees are essential when calculating aspects, since the distance between two planets indicates whether they form a conjunction, trine, square, opposition, or another angular connection. Astrologers also use degrees to assess an aspect’s orb and whether it is applying or separating. Some traditions assign special meanings to particular degrees, including sign boundaries, decans, terms, and the final degree of a sign. These interpretations depend on the astrological system being used and should be considered alongside the planet, sign, house, and wider chart.

Why It Matters

Degree positions add precision to chart interpretation. Two planets in the same sign may operate differently if they occupy widely separated degrees, while planets in different signs may still form a close aspect. Accurate degrees are especially important for chart angles, house cusps, transits, progressions, and timing techniques.
