Decumbiture is a traditional astrological chart cast for the time and place when an illness begins, becomes clearly recognizable, or causes a person to take to bed. The term comes from a Latin root associated with lying down. Unlike a natal chart, it describes a particular episode rather than the pattern of an entire life.

Astrological Meaning

In classical medical astrology, the decumbiture chart was interpreted to explore the character and possible course of an illness. Practitioners commonly considered the Ascendant and its ruler as significators of the patient, while the sixth house and its ruler represented illness. The Moon’s condition, planetary aspects, house rulerships, and the relative strength of benefic and malefic planets added context. Different traditions used varying rules, especially when choosing between the first symptoms, a formal diagnosis, or the moment the patient became bedridden as the chart’s starting time.
