Definition

Correction is a general astrological term for an adjustment made to chart data or a calculated position so that it more accurately reflects the intended time, place, or celestial measurement. Depending on the historical source, it may refer to correcting local time, converting calendars, accounting for astronomical irregularities, or refining a planet’s mean position to its true position. It is a calculation procedure rather than a planet, aspect, dignity, or interpretive principle.

Astrological Meaning

In classical astrology, accurate calculations support judgments about houses, planetary positions, aspects, and timing. A correction can therefore change the technical foundation of an interpretation, especially when a planet or angle lies near a sign, house, or aspect boundary. The specific adjustment must be identified from context because older texts and tables do not always use the term in the same way. Correction should also be distinguished from birth-time rectification, which estimates an uncertain birth time by comparing possible charts with known life events.

Why It Matters

Small data or conversion errors may produce noticeable chart differences, particularly for the Ascendant, Midheaven, Moon, house cusps, and time-sensitive techniques. Understanding what was corrected—and why—helps astrologers evaluate whether a chart is internally consistent and whether traditional instructions have been applied properly. It also encourages careful interpretation: a corrected calculation may improve precision, but it does not make an astrological judgment certain or remove the need to consider the chart as a whole.
