Definition

A conjunction occurs when two planets or chart points occupy the same or nearly the same zodiacal degree, forming an angle close to 0°. “Conjoined to” is traditional wording for this relationship. The aspect operates within an accepted orb and may be applying, exact, or separating. Some traditional astrologers distinguish a same-sign bodily conjunction from planets close by degree but placed across a sign boundary.

Astrological Meaning

A conjunction concentrates the symbolism of the planets involved, making their functions difficult to separate. It can suggest cooperation, reinforcement, tension, or one planet dominating another; it is not automatically favorable or unfavorable. Interpretation depends on the planets’ natures, signs, houses, dignity, sect, speed, angularity, and rulerships. An applying conjunction generally indicates a developing union, while a separating conjunction describes one that has recently reached exactness and is beginning to disperse.

Why It Matters

Recognizing what is conjoined helps identify major centers of emphasis in a chart. In a natal chart, a conjunction may describe an enduring blend of drives or life themes. A transiting conjunction temporarily activates the natal planet or point it contacts. In synastry, one person’s planet conjunct another’s can mark a strong area of mutual awareness, although the quality depends on both planets and the wider relationship charts. Careful attention to orb, sign boundaries, and planetary condition prevents oversimplified readings.
