Definition
The Chaldaeans were a people associated with southern Mesopotamia, particularly Babylonia. In Greek and Roman writings, their name also became a broad label for Mesopotamian priest-scholars, diviners, and astrologers. This later usage does not always refer precisely to the historical Chaldaean people, so its meaning depends on context.
Astrological Meaning
In astrology, the Chaldaeans are linked with the transmission of Babylonian celestial observation and omen traditions into the wider ancient Mediterranean world. The term also appears in the “Chaldean order” of the seven traditional planets: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, and Moon. This sequence reflects their perceived speed and cosmological distance in the geocentric model. It underlies several traditional techniques, including planetary hours and some systems connecting planets with zodiacal decans. References to Chaldaean astrology may therefore indicate either an ancient cultural tradition or a specific planetary arrangement.
