Astronomy
Definition
Astronomy is the scientific study of celestial objects, space, and the physical universe. It observes and measures the positions, movements, structures, and properties of bodies such as the Sun, Moon, planets, stars, and asteroids. Although astronomy and astrology share ancient roots, they are distinct disciplines: astronomy investigates celestial phenomena through scientific methods, while astrology interprets their symbolic significance in relation to earthly life.
Astrological Meaning
Astrology depends on astronomical information to calculate natal charts, transits, planetary cycles, eclipses, retrogrades, and other configurations. Accurate data about time, location, planetary longitude, and apparent motion provides the framework upon which astrological interpretation is built. Concepts such as the ecliptic, zodiac, equinoxes, and planetary stations have astronomical foundations, even when astrologers approach them through symbolic or traditional systems.
Why It Matters
Understanding basic astronomy helps astrologers distinguish observable celestial events from the meanings assigned to them. It can clarify why planets appear retrograde, how houses depend on location and time, and why tropical and sidereal zodiacs use different reference points. This knowledge does not determine whether an interpretation is correct, but it supports technical accuracy, clearer terminology, and a more informed reading of the natal chart. It also encourages a thoughtful distinction between measurable planetary positions and the interpretive principles used in astrology.
