Inconjunct, Dissociate

Definition

An inconjunct is a 150-degree relationship, often called a quincunx, between planets or chart points. In sign-based traditional astrology, the involved signs do not form a recognized major aspect and are therefore said to be in aversion. “Dissociate” usually describes a degree-based aspect that crosses sign boundaries, so the planets are within an aspect’s orb even though their signs do not share that same aspect relationship.

Astrological Meaning

An inconjunct may indicate two planetary functions that have difficulty recognizing, coordinating, or directly supporting one another. Interpretation often emphasizes adjustment, competing priorities, or the need to manage elements of life that operate according to different rules. A dissociate aspect is more nuanced: the planets may form a conjunction, sextile, square, trine, or opposition by degree, while their signs suggest a different relationship. For example, planets can be close to a trine by degree but occupy signs that are not trine by sign. Some astrologers treat the degree-based aspect as active but weakened or complicated; others give sign-based geometry greater priority.

Why It Matters

Distinguishing inconjuncts from dissociate aspects prevents chart interpretation from becoming mechanically degree-based. Sign relationship, orb, planetary condition, house placement, and the type of chart all affect the judgment. The distinction is especially useful when an aspect appears strong numerically but behaves less directly than a standard same-sign-based aspect would suggest.
