Apsis
Definition
An apsis is either of the two points in an orbit where one celestial body is nearest to or farthest from the body it circles. The nearest point is the periapsis, and the farthest is the apoapsis. More specific terms include perigee and apogee for objects orbiting Earth, and perihelion and aphelion for objects orbiting the Sun.
Astrological Meaning
In astrology, apsides are calculated orbital points rather than physical planets. The lunar apsides receive the most attention: the Moon’s apogee is associated with the calculated point commonly called Black Moon Lilith, while the opposite point, the lunar perigee, is sometimes called Priapus in modern practice. Interpretations vary by school, but these points may be used to explore symbolic themes of distance and closeness, attraction and rejection, instinct, desire, or experiences that feel difficult to integrate. Their sign, house, aspects, and calculation method should be considered before drawing conclusions.
Why It Matters
Understanding an apsis helps distinguish astronomical reference points from celestial bodies in a natal chart. It also clarifies how points such as Black Moon Lilith are derived. Because apsidal interpretations are specialized and not universally used, they are generally most informative when treated as an additional layer rather than the foundation of chart interpretation.
