Acronycal
Definition
Acronycal describes a celestial body rising near sunset or setting near sunrise. This usually occurs when the body is approximately opposite the Sun, placing it in a favorable position for nighttime observation.
Astrological Meaning
Traditional astrologers paid close attention to visibility. A planet that rises as the Sun sets can remain visible for much of the night and may appear more independent than a planet hidden in solar glare. Acronycal position is therefore part of the wider study of planetary phases.
Why It Matters
The term is especially useful when reading older astronomical and astrological texts. It connects the geometry of opposition with what an observer actually sees in the sky and helps explain why visibility was once treated as a measure of planetary prominence.
