Cartomancy

Cartomancy is a divination practice that involves using a deck of cards, to gain insight and guidance into various aspects of a person’s life or to predict future events. It’s a form of divination that has been practiced for centuries and is often considered a type of psychic or mystical art.  The reader interprets the symbolism, imagery, and arrangement of the cards drawn or laid out in a specific pattern. Different cards are associated with different meanings and concepts, and the way they are combined and positioned can influence the interpretation. The reader might consider the relationships between cards, their positions in the spread, and their orientations (reversed or upright) to provide insights and predictions.

There are several different forms of cartomancy, each using a specific type of card deck and interpretation method. Here are some notable forms of cartomancy:

Tarot Card Reading: This is the most popular forms of cartomancy. The 78-card deck is divided into the Major Arcana and Minor Arcana, each with its own set of meanings. Tarot readers use various spreads and combinations of cards to offer insights into different aspects of a person’s life.

Lenormand Card Reading: The Lenormand deck consists of 36 cards, each depicting a simple image or symbol. This form of cartomancy focuses on clear and direct interpretations, often involving combinations of two or more cards to form a sentence-like statement about a situation.

Oracle Card Reading: Oracle decks come in a wide range of themes and designs. Unlike tarot and Lenormand, oracle cards don’t follow a standardized system. They might have inspirational messages, affirmations, or symbolic imagery that the reader interprets based on their intuition and the theme of the deck.

Playing Card Reading: Using a standard deck of 52 playing cards, this form of cartomancy assigns meanings to each card based on their rank and suit. Different spreads and combinations are used to provide insights into various life situations.

Gypsy Card Reading: Also known as the Kipper cards, this method uses a deck of 36 cards with specific images and meanings. Gypsy card readings often focus on practical matters and day-to-day life situations.

Regular Playing Cards: Similar to playing card reading, this form of cartomancy uses the standard 52-card deck, attributing meanings to each card based on their number and suit. Different spreads and techniques are used to provide guidance and predictions.

Sibilla Card Reading: The Sibilla card deck contains a varied number of cards (often 52 or more) with intricate imagery and symbolism. Readers combine and interpret cards in response to questions or situations.

Destiny Card Reading: This system assigns a specific playing card to each day of the year based on a person’s birthdate. These birth cards are thought to hold insights into a person’s strengths, challenges, and life path.

These are just a few examples of the many different forms of cartomancy. Each form has its own unique characteristics, interpretations, and spreads, and practitioners often choose the one that resonates most with them or the one that fits the type of guidance they seek to offer.

Tarot Decks

The world today is flooded with Tarot deck options, from the classic 78 card Rider-Waite, to the trendy Oracle Decks with no set number of cards. So many options can blur the waters, making it challenging to determine which ones will be useful to the reader.

Tarot cards themselves are only a tool.  The cards allow a reader to communicate with spirit via the subconscious mind, which speaks only in symbols.  The symbols appear in the cards which are then translated to the reader using psychic abilities.  Readings are enhanced by clairvoyant, clairaudient, and clairsentient abilities.

We can think of each deck as a different language.  Many are derivative of older versions, only giving new flare, while others are totally unique.  The best path is to become completely familiar with one first, becoming fluent in the language of symbolism and interpretations of each card in the deck.  Think of this as a native language, as it will always be what is most comfortable and familiar.  It can be beneficial and mind opening to learn new languages.

However, the completely derivative decks are not really helpful for a new point of view.   A reader may prefer the new look, but most of the modern decks are based upon the Rider-Waite deck, created in 1909.  One deck that does stand out is the Thoth Deck, published in 1944, commissioned by Aleister Crowley.  Very few deck creators stray from these two decks as inspiration.  Most of them are artists looking for a drawing project, which can be pretty, but does anyone really need the Hello Kitty Tarot? (and yes, it exists)

The new trends in tarot are the oracle cards and angel decks.  These decks are usually created with a specific purpose or theme in mind.  The number of cards and artistic style is completely open.  The tradition is actually quite old, with decks of cards with images and prompt words.  These decks can be used alone or in conjunction with traditional decks.  The additional insight can enhance the reading, giving an accent to the language.

The amount of cards on the market has surged due to increased interest in the Tarot, and many more decks are on the way.  It is a huge undertaking to draw so many cards within the same theme, and at the same time thinking how they work as a whole.  It is the symbolism within the cards that is most important, so a reader can use decks that “speak” to them.

Black Cat Tarot

Tarot is the trip in which you end up precisely where you started, much like life. This concept is reinforced in the Black Cat’s Tarot, publicized by Lo Scarabeo and Maria Kuara as the artist. The cards are on rather traditional card stock and some of the images’ darker areas are lacking in visual detail. But the artwork is stunning. The card has a white cat portrayed as the Fool starting on an adventure.

Throughout the rest of the cards, including the suits, the cats are portrayed as black cats. The Sun card image brings the joyous image of its meaning in this deck wouldn’t be considered traditional Rider-Waite because several of the photos stray from the conventional. Most notable is the Hierophant card, which shows a black cat offering cheese to some white rats.

This is either transcendence of one’s nature to guide and lead or it is an image of how easily one can be deceived and put in danger by blindly following an ideal without questioning the motive behind it. Either bring a depth of meaning to the card that sets this deck apart from other Tarot decks. Another compelling image is the 7 of swords. Traditionally the 7 of swords are shown to be a person who appears to have obtained mastery through trickery or deceit. In the Black Cats Tarot, the image is of a cat using resources available to them to achieve a goal.

This adds an introduction to the achievement of a goal. Accomplishments are fulfilled by cleverness and ingenuity as well as or despite sneakiness or lies. Also, of note is the gender neutrality of the cat. There are no defining characteristics that would point to male or female, making this a perfect deck for remaining detached from usual stereotypes that can skew the reading. In the final card of Fool’s journey, the World shows a black cat shedding his skin to reveal the white cat from the Fool card underneath.

It is a beautiful way of showing that although one makes this journey and is undeniably changed by every person and experience along the way, that at the end they remain intact. This is an exciting deck of beauty and depth that should have a place in any Tarot enthusiast’s collection.
