Superior Conjunction

Definition

A superior conjunction occurs when Mercury or Venus aligns with the Sun while positioned on the far side of the Sun from Earth. In a geocentric chart, the planet and Sun occupy the same zodiacal degree. It differs from an inferior conjunction, in which Mercury or Venus passes between Earth and the Sun. Astronomically, a superior conjunction marks the midpoint of the planet’s synodic cycle.

Astrological Meaning

Astrologically, this conjunction may represent a culmination, clarification, or reorientation within the cycle of the planet involved. Mercury emphasizes thought, communication, learning, and decisions, while Venus concerns relationships, values, attraction, and resources. Because the planet is hidden in the Sun’s light, its themes may be active without being immediately visible or easy to express. The conjunction’s house, sign, aspects, and exactness refine its interpretation. Traditional considerations such as combustion or cazimi may also apply, depending on the distance from the Sun.
