Interpretation
Definition
Interpretation is the process of translating astrological symbols into a coherent account of tendencies, circumstances, and possible experiences. It moves beyond identifying planets, signs, houses, aspects, and timing techniques by considering how those factors operate together. A sound interpretation explains symbolism in context rather than treating each chart feature as an isolated statement.
Astrological Meaning
In astrology, interpretation usually begins with the type of chart and the question being examined. In a natal chart, the astrologer may weigh planetary condition, house placement, sign expression, aspects, rulerships, and the overall chart pattern. Traditional astrology may add concepts such as sect, dignity, reception, and house strength. Transit interpretation instead compares current planetary motion with a natal or event chart, while synastry examines contacts between two separate charts. No single placement necessarily overrides the rest; repeated themes and well-supported patterns generally deserve greater emphasis.
Why It Matters
Interpretation is what turns technical chart data into practical understanding. Careful synthesis can reveal tensions, resources, priorities, and periods of heightened activity without presenting symbolism as fixed fate. Clear interpretation also helps distinguish established astrological technique from personal projection, encouraging conclusions that are proportionate to the evidence in the chart and relevant to the purpose of the reading.
