Midpoint

Definition

A midpoint is the zodiacal degree located halfway between two planets, angles, or other chart points. Because every pair has two opposing halfway positions, astrologers commonly calculate the point along the shorter arc and recognize its opposite as the indirect midpoint. Midpoints are sensitive points rather than physical bodies, and they are usually interpreted with narrow orbs.

Astrological Meaning

A midpoint combines the symbolism of its two component factors. For example, the Sun–Moon midpoint can describe ways that identity, purpose, feelings, and instinct seek integration. In a natal chart, a planet or angle contacting a midpoint becomes part of that combined pattern. During a transit, a moving planet may temporarily emphasize the midpoint’s themes. In synastry, one person’s planet contacting another person’s midpoint can highlight a specific area of interaction. Conjunctions and oppositions are central to midpoint work, although some astrologers also consider squares and other hard aspects.

Why It Matters

Midpoints add precision by revealing relationships that may not be obvious from ordinary aspects alone. They can clarify how two chart factors operate together and identify degrees that respond strongly to natal placements, transits, progressions, or another person’s chart. Interpretation is most useful when the midpoint pair, contacting factor, aspect, orb, and wider chart context are all considered rather than treating a single contact as decisive.
