May

Definition

May is the fifth month of the Gregorian calendar. In tropical Western astrology, it usually begins while the Sun is in Taurus and ends after the Sun enters Gemini, generally around May 20 or 21. Exact ingress times vary by year and location, so an ephemeris or calculated chart is needed for precision.

Astrological Meaning

May itself is not a planet, sign, house, or aspect and therefore has no single astrological meaning. Its symbolism is commonly drawn from the solar signs associated with it. Taurus themes may include stability, resources, patience, embodiment, and values, while Gemini may emphasize curiosity, communication, movement, and exchange. The Moon’s phases, planetary transits, and retrograde cycles differ each May and provide the month’s more specific astrological character. Seasonal imagery should also be used carefully because May occurs in spring in the Northern Hemisphere and autumn in the Southern Hemisphere.

Why It Matters

May is useful as a calendar reference for locating events, birthdays, transits, and solar ingresses. A person born in May cannot be interpreted accurately from the month alone: the birth date, exact time, location, and complete natal chart determine planetary positions and house placements. For forecasting, astrologers compare the year’s May transits with a natal or mundane chart rather than assuming the month always produces the same effects.
