Definition

An ingress is the moment a planet or other astrological point enters a new zodiac sign. The term may also describe entry into a chart house, although sign ingresses are more widely used. An ingress marks a boundary crossing and the beginning of a new phase in that body’s cycle.

Astrological Meaning

Astrologers interpret an ingress by combining the nature of the entering planet with the qualities of its new sign. A transiting ingress describes a current collective or personal timing factor, while an ingress involving a progressed planet belongs to a symbolic developmental technique. In mundane astrology, charts cast for major ingresses—especially the Sun’s entry into Aries, Cancer, Libra, or Capricorn—may be studied for themes affecting a place or period. House placement, aspects, dignity, and local chart angles add context.

Why It Matters

Ingresses help astrologers identify shifts in emphasis rather than guaranteed events. A fast-moving Moon ingress may describe a brief change in mood or focus, whereas an outer-planet ingress can frame a long cultural transition.
