Definition

A stellium is a concentrated group of planets in one zodiac sign or astrological house. Many astrologers require at least three planets, although some traditional definitions use four. The Sun and Moon may be included, while points such as the Ascendant are usually treated separately. Because definitions vary, the planets involved and their closeness by degree should always be stated.

Astrological Meaning

A stellium concentrates several planetary functions within one area of a chart. Its sign describes the shared style of expression, while its house identifies the life topics receiving sustained emphasis. Each planet retains its own meaning: Venus may seek harmony, Mars may assert, and Saturn may set limits. Their aspects, dignity, house rulerships, and exact degree relationships help show whether the concentration operates smoothly, tensely, or in mixed ways. A stellium does not erase the rest of the natal chart.

Why It Matters

Recognizing a stellium helps explain why a person may repeatedly focus on particular themes, develop specialized strengths, or feel challenged to create balance elsewhere. During transits, an outer or faster-moving planet may activate the grouped planets in sequence, producing an extended period of related developments rather than one isolated event. Interpretation is most useful when it considers the whole chart, including the opposite sign or house and any planets aspecting the stellium, rather than assuming that concentration guarantees a fixed personality or outcome.
