Definition

The luminaries are the Sun and Moon, traditionally called the two lights of the horoscope. Although neither is classified as a planet in modern astronomy, astrology places them alongside the planets as primary chart factors. The Sun is the greater light, while the Moon is the lesser light because it reflects the Sun’s illumination.

Astrological Meaning

The Sun commonly represents vitality, purpose, identity, authority, and the drive toward conscious self-expression. The Moon is associated with instinct, emotional responses, habits, memory, bodily rhythms, and the need for security. Their signs describe how these functions tend to operate, their houses show where they become especially active, and their aspects reveal how they interact with other chart factors. Traditional astrologers also assess each luminary’s dignity, house position, visibility, phase, and relationship to sect: the Sun leads a daytime chart, while the Moon leads a nighttime chart.

Why It Matters

Together, the luminaries provide an essential foundation for chart interpretation. Comparing them can suggest how conscious aims and instinctive needs cooperate or conflict. Their condition may also help an astrologer identify central motivations, recurring patterns, and areas of life that receive particular emphasis, without reducing the whole horoscope to Sun and Moon signs alone.
