Definition

In astrology, the Lights are the Sun and Moon, also called the luminaries. Although astrologers commonly group them with the planets when reading a chart, they occupy a distinct symbolic category. Their name reflects their visible brightness and central importance in both classical and modern interpretation.

Astrological Meaning

The Sun generally represents identity, purpose, vitality, authority, and the drive to express a coherent self. The Moon is associated with instinct, emotion, memory, bodily rhythms, habits, and the need for security. Their signs, houses, aspects, and condition help describe how these two fundamental principles operate. Traditional astrology also considers sect: the Sun leads a daytime chart, while the Moon leads a nighttime chart. Dignity, angularity, phase, and relationships with other planets can further modify how readily either Light expresses itself. Neither luminary should be interpreted in isolation, because their relationship helps reveal the balance between conscious direction and instinctive response.

Why It Matters

The Lights form a primary framework for understanding a natal chart. Together, they can clarify what a person seeks to become and what helps them feel supported while doing so. Their condition may indicate areas of confidence, sensitivity, tension, or development, but it does not guarantee particular events or outcomes. Studying both luminaries provides a more balanced reading than relying on the Sun sign alone.
