Definition

A heliacal setting is a celestial body’s final visible appearance in the evening sky before it becomes hidden by the Sun’s glare. The body sets shortly after sunset and then disappears from view for a period as it approaches conjunction with the Sun. This phase is the counterpart of the heliacal rising, when a body first becomes visible again.

Astrological Meaning

In traditional astrology, heliacal setting marks a transition from visibility to concealment. Visibility was associated with a planet or star’s capacity to make its qualities apparent, while disappearance could suggest withdrawal, completion, obscurity, or movement into a less publicly evident phase. Interpretation depends on the body involved, its condition, the chart context, and the tradition being used. A planet’s heliacal phase should not be confused with simply being below the horizon or broadly described as under the Sun’s beams.
