Definition

In astrology, the horizon is the great circle that separates the visible half of the sky from the half hidden below the Earth at a specific time and location. Its intersections with the ecliptic form the Ascendant in the east and the Descendant in the west. Together, these points create the horizon axis of a horoscope.

Astrological Meaning

The horizon gives a chart its local orientation and helps establish the houses. Planets above it occupy the visible hemisphere, while planets below it occupy the hidden hemisphere. Astrologers may interpret this division as a contrast between outward participation and more private, inward, or foundational experience. However, the meaning depends on the complete chart, including house placement, rulership, aspects, and planetary condition. In traditional astrology, whether the Sun is above or below the horizon also determines whether a chart is diurnal or nocturnal, an important part of sect analysis.

Why It Matters

Because the horizon is calculated for a precise place and time, it connects celestial positions with the observer’s location. It determines the Ascendant and Descendant, strongly influences house cusps, and identifies which planets are rising, setting, culminating, or placed beneath the Earth. An accurate birth time is therefore especially important when interpreting the horizon axis. Understanding it also prevents a common confusion: the horizon is the full east–west circle, whereas the Ascendant is only its eastern intersection with the ecliptic.
