Definition
Short ascension describes zodiac signs that rise over the eastern horizon in less than the average time of about two hours. This unequal rising results from the angle between the ecliptic and the local horizon, so it varies with geographic latitude and hemisphere. In northern latitudes, Capricorn through Gemini are generally signs of short ascension; in southern latitudes, the pattern is reversed. Near the equator, rising times are more nearly equal.
Astrological Meaning
In traditional astrology, short-ascension signs move across the Ascendant relatively quickly. Consequently, less clock time is available for any one of these signs to rise, affecting house-cusp calculations and the timing of a changing Ascendant. Charts cast at higher latitudes may show the effect more strongly. Short ascension is an astronomical-chart factor rather than a personality trait by itself, and it should not be interpreted as making a sign weaker, less important, or inherently brief in expression.
Why It Matters
Understanding short ascension helps explain why zodiac signs do not rise at uniform speeds and why birth-time accuracy can be especially important. A small difference in recorded time may shift the Ascendant or house cusps more noticeably when a rapidly rising sign is involved.
