Definition

The Ascendant and Descendant are opposite points on the horizon in an astrological chart. The Ascendant is the zodiacal degree rising in the east at the chart’s calculated time and place, while the Descendant is the degree setting in the west. They form the first-house and seventh-house cusps in many house systems and create the chart’s relationship axis.

Astrological Meaning

The Ascendant describes how a person approaches life, enters situations, and presents themselves to the world. Its sign, degree, ruling planet, and nearby planets refine its interpretation. The Descendant concerns encounters with others, especially close partnerships, agreements, and open conflicts. Its sign may suggest qualities sought, noticed, or negotiated in relationships.
