Definition

In astrology, an angle is one of four primary points formed by the intersection of the horizon and meridian with the birth chart. These are the Ascendant, Descendant, Midheaven, and Imum Coeli. Together, they establish the chart’s orientation and mark the cusps of the first, seventh, tenth, and fourth houses.

Astrological Meaning

Each angle represents a major area of experience. The Ascendant concerns identity, approach, and outward expression; the Descendant describes partnerships and encounters with others. The Midheaven relates to public life, vocation, reputation, and direction, while the Imum Coeli refers to roots, home, family foundations, and private life. Planets close to an angle are called angular and are often interpreted as especially prominent or readily expressed. Their meaning depends on the planet, sign, house, aspects, and the chart as a whole.

Why It Matters

Angles provide an essential framework for natal chart interpretation because they connect planetary symbolism to specific spheres of life. Accurate birth time is particularly important when calculating them, since the angles move relatively quickly. They are also used in transits, progressions, synastry, and other timing or relationship techniques, where contacts to an angle may emphasize themes associated with that point without guaranteeing a particular event.
