Interlunar
Definition
Interlunar refers to the interval around the Moon’s conjunction with the Sun, when the lunar disk is hidden by solar glare and little or no reflected light is visible from Earth. Often associated with the dark phase immediately before a New Moon, the term may describe a brief astronomical period rather than a separate lunar phase with fixed boundaries.
Astrological Meaning
In astrology, the interlunar period is commonly interpreted as a transitional pause between the ending lunar cycle and the beginning one. Traditional and modern practitioners may associate it with withdrawal, completion, reflection, or activity developing out of sight. A natal Moon placed near the Sun can indicate birth during this interval, but its interpretation also depends on the exact lunar phase, zodiac signs, houses, aspects, and whether the Moon is applying to or separating from conjunction.
Why It Matters
Recognizing the interlunar interval helps an astrologer distinguish the dark, concluding portion of the lunar cycle from the first visible waxing crescent. This can add timing and context to natal, electional, or mundane work. It should not be treated as inherently unfavorable; its symbolism may instead emphasize incubation, release, privacy, and preparation before a new cycle becomes visible.
