Ephemeral Motion is an uncommon astrological expression for planetary movement or a celestial condition that is brief and continually changing. It may describe the short-term motion recorded in an ephemeris, including changes in a planet’s position, speed, or direction. It is descriptive rather than a formally standardized chart factor and should not be confused with the ephemeris itself, which is a table of calculated positions.
Astrologers may use ephemeral motion to emphasize that transiting conditions are temporary. A fast-moving planet can form and separate from aspects quickly, while a slower planet may remain within range for weeks or months. Apparent geocentric motion may be direct, stationary, or retrograde, and each phase affects the timing and duration of an aspect. Traditional interpretation also considers whether a planet is unusually swift or slow relative to its typical daily motion.
Recognizing ephemeral motion helps separate passing influences from enduring chart symbolism. A natal placement remains part of the birth chart, whereas a transit activates particular themes for a limited period. Tracking planetary speed, stations, and applying or separating aspects can refine timing and show when a configuration is building, peaking, or fading. The term is best understood in context, since different astrologers may use it informally rather than as a precise technical category.
