Mean Time is a timekeeping system based on the average daily motion of the Sun rather than its irregular apparent motion across the sky. A hypothetical “mean Sun” moves at a uniform rate, making each day equal in length. Local Mean Time is calculated from a place’s longitude, while standard civil time follows an officially designated time-zone meridian.

Astrological Meaning

In astrology, Mean Time is primarily a calculation concept rather than a symbolic chart factor. Historical birth records may use Local Mean Time, especially when they predate standardized time zones. To calculate a natal chart accurately, the recorded time may need to be converted into Universal Time according to the location, date, timekeeping convention, and any applicable daylight-saving or wartime rules. Mean Time should not be confused with apparent solar time or sidereal time, which are derived differently.

Why It Matters

Correctly identifying the time standard helps establish the Ascendant, Midheaven, house cusps, and sometimes the Moon’s precise position. Even a modest conversion error can alter angles or house placements, particularly near sign or house boundaries. Understanding Mean Time therefore supports careful chart reconstruction and prevents historical clock conventions from being mistaken for astrological interpretation.
