Exaltation is one of the essential dignities used in traditional astrology to assess a planet’s condition. Each of the seven traditional planets has a zodiac sign in which it is exalted. A planet placed there is treated as an honored guest: supported and prominent, though not necessarily as settled or self-directed as a planet in its domicile.
An exalted planet may express its symbolism with confidence, visibility, or heightened effectiveness. For example, the Sun is exalted in Aries, the Moon in Taurus, and Saturn in Libra. Interpretation still depends on the complete chart, including the planet’s house, aspects, sect, motion, and rulerships. Exaltation does not automatically make a planet beneficial or guarantee favorable events; it indicates strength and status, which may be used constructively or expressed excessively.
Recognizing exaltation helps astrologers judge how readily a planet can carry out its functions and manage the topics it rules. It adds nuance to natal, horary, electional, and mundane interpretation, especially when compared with domicile, detriment, and fall. Used alongside other chart factors, exaltation clarifies planetary capacity without reducing the reading to a simple good-or-bad label.
