Definition

Dignities and debilities are traditional methods for assessing how comfortably and effectively a planet can express its nature in a chart. Essential dignity is based mainly on zodiacal position and includes domicile, exaltation, triplicity, term or bound, and face or decan. Essential debility commonly refers to detriment and fall. Accidental dignity or debility considers circumstances such as house placement, motion, visibility, and aspects.

Astrological Meaning

A dignified planet is generally interpreted as having reliable access to its characteristic qualities and resources. A debilitated planet may operate less directly, face competing demands, or require adaptation. This does not make the planet inherently good, bad, powerful, or powerless. Astrologers weigh the type and degree of dignity, the planet’s condition, its rulerships, reception with other planets, and the chart’s overall context before forming a judgment.

Why It Matters

Dignities and debilities add precision to natal, horary, electional, and mundane interpretation. They help distinguish a planet’s symbolic role from its capacity to carry out that role under particular conditions.
