An annular eclipse is a solar eclipse in which the Moon passes directly between Earth and the Sun but appears too small to cover the Sun completely. A bright ring, or annulus, remains visible around the Moon. This occurs near a New Moon and a lunar node, when the Moon is relatively far from Earth in its orbit.
In astrology, an annular eclipse is interpreted as a concentrated New Moon that may emphasize beginnings, transitions, revelations, or the temporary obscuring of familiar priorities. Its meaning is primarily derived from the zodiac sign and degree of the eclipse, its house position in a natal chart, and close aspects to planets or angles. The visible ring can symbolically suggest that something essential remains present even while circumstances are changing. However, annularity alone does not guarantee that an eclipse will be stronger, weaker, positive, or difficult.
Annular eclipses matter in predictive astrology because their degrees can identify themes that unfold over the following weeks or months. They are usually most personally relevant when closely contacting a natal planet, Ascendant, Midheaven, or another sensitive point. Astrologers also consider the eclipse path, planetary ruler, and related eclipse cycle. Interpretation is best grounded in the full natal chart rather than treated as a stand-alone forecast.
