The twelve zodiac signs are equal 30-degree divisions of the ecliptic, the Sun’s apparent yearly path around Earth. Each sign is a symbolic pattern rather than simply a star constellation, describing a particular style of expression, motivation, and response.

Astrological Meaning

Astrologers organize the signs through four elements—fire, earth, air, and water—and three modalities: cardinal, fixed, and mutable. They are also grouped by polarity and associated with planetary rulers. In a natal chart, a sign modifies how a planet’s function tends to operate: Mars describes assertion, for example, while its sign suggests the manner in which that assertion may be expressed. Houses indicate life areas, and aspects describe relationships between planets, so a sign should not be interpreted alone.
