Semi-square

Definition

A semi-square is a minor astrological aspect formed when two planets or chart points are approximately 45 degrees apart. Also called an octile, it results from dividing the zodiac’s 360-degree circle into eight equal sections. Astrologers usually interpret it with a relatively narrow orb, often no more than two or three degrees.

Astrological Meaning

The semi-square is generally associated with friction, pressure, or irritation that encourages adjustment. It resembles a square in tone but is often subtler and less immediately visible. In a natal chart, the planets involved describe drives that may repeatedly rub against one another, creating restlessness or a need to develop practical coping skills. The signs show how those drives operate, while the houses identify the life areas where the tension may be experienced. During a transit, a semi-square may coincide with a temporary obstacle, internal push, or circumstance requiring attention. Its significance depends on the planets involved, the exactness of the aspect, and the wider chart pattern.

Why It Matters

Because it is a minor aspect, the semi-square should not outweigh stronger features such as conjunctions, oppositions, squares, or major angular placements. However, repeated semi-squares or a very exact one can add useful detail to chart interpretation. Recognizing this aspect can help explain persistent low-level tension and show where small, conscious changes may prevent frustration from accumulating.
