Definition
In astrology, prognosis is the reasoned assessment of how a situation may develop over time. The term appears especially in traditional and predictive astrology, where an astrologer judges likely conditions, turning points, or periods of emphasis from a chart. It describes an informed forecast rather than an unavoidable prediction and is not limited to medical matters.
Astrological Meaning
An astrological prognosis usually combines several factors. The natal chart describes underlying tendencies and circumstances, while timing techniques—such as transits, profections, solar returns, or directions—indicate when particular themes may become more active. In horary or electional work, prognosis may instead concern the probable course of a specific question or undertaking. Conclusions are generally stronger when multiple techniques support the same interpretation.
Why It Matters
Prognosis helps distinguish predictive judgment from simple chart description. It encourages astrologers to consider timing, context, and the relative strength of different testimonies rather than relying on one isolated placement. Used carefully, it can identify periods of opportunity, pressure, or change while leaving room for personal choice, practical circumstances, and uncertainty. Its value lies in informed preparation, not fatalistic certainty.
