Polar distance is the angular distance between a celestial body and a celestial pole, measured along the body’s hour circle. When measured from the north celestial pole, it is the complement of declination: 90 degrees minus north declination, or 90 degrees plus south declination. Its possible range is 0 to 180 degrees. The term belongs to celestial geometry and is sometimes called co-declination.
In traditional and mathematical astrology, polar distance helps locate a planet or point relative to Earth’s celestial equator and poles. It may appear in calculations involving primary directions, semi-arcs, mundane positions, house systems, and rising or setting times. Polar distance is not usually interpreted as an independent symbol like a planet, sign, or aspect. Instead, it functions as a technical value that supports the accurate placement and movement of chart factors.
Understanding polar distance clarifies how declination connects with older astrological calculations. Two bodies at different declinations travel along different daily arcs, affecting how long they remain above the horizon and how they are handled in certain directional techniques. For most modern chart readings, software performs these calculations automatically. However, students of traditional astrology benefit from recognizing the term, checking whether distance is measured from the north or south pole, and distinguishing it from geographic latitude, celestial longitude, and declination itself.
