Perihelion

Definition

Perihelion is the point in an orbit at which a planet, asteroid, comet, or other body comes closest to the Sun. The opposite point, where the body is farthest from the Sun, is called aphelion. A body generally moves fastest near perihelion because of the mechanics of its elliptical orbit. Earth reaches perihelion in early January, although the precise date varies slightly.

Astrological Meaning

Perihelion is an astronomical condition rather than a standard sign, house, or aspect. It has limited use in mainstream natal astrology, which usually interprets planets from a geocentric viewpoint. In specialized heliocentric, mundane, asteroid, or comet work, astrologers may treat perihelion as a phase of intensified solar proximity, increased orbital speed, or concentrated expression. Its interpretation depends on the body involved, its orbital cycle, and the chart framework being used. Earth’s perihelion should not be confused with the Sun’s apparent position in a natal chart or with seasonal temperature changes.

Why It Matters

Understanding perihelion helps astrologers distinguish measurable orbital features from symbolic chart factors. It can add context when studying planetary motion, unusual celestial bodies, or techniques that incorporate astronomical cycles. However, perihelion alone does not determine personality or events. If included in interpretation, it is best considered alongside aspects, planetary condition, houses, signs, and the purpose of the chart rather than treated as an independent prediction.
