Definition

In astrology, a map is a symbolic diagram of the sky calculated for a particular time and, usually, a specific location. More commonly called a chart or horoscope, it places the Sun, Moon, planets, angles, houses, and other relevant points within the zodiac. A natal chart maps a birth moment, while event, electional, horary, and transit maps represent other times or questions.

Astrological Meaning

An astrological map organizes celestial positions so their relationships can be interpreted. Zodiac signs describe how a planet tends to express itself; houses identify areas of life; aspects show angular relationships between planets; and the Ascendant, Midheaven, and other angles anchor the chart to place and time. The map is not the physical sky itself but a structured model created through astronomical calculation and astrological convention. Different traditions may use distinct house systems, zodiacs, or interpretive techniques, so maps calculated from the same moment can be presented differently.

Why It Matters

Thinking of a chart as a map encourages interpretation through patterns and context rather than isolated symbols. No single placement determines an outcome; astrologers consider the chart as a whole, including planetary condition, rulership, aspects, and timing. Accurate birth or event data also matters because changes in time or location can alter the houses and angles. Used carefully, the map provides a practical framework for exploring temperament, circumstances, cycles, and possible choices without treating them as fixed certainties.
