Conj is an abbreviation for conjunction, a major astrological aspect formed when two planets or chart points occupy the same or nearby degrees of the zodiac. It commonly appears in chart tables, aspect grids, and older astrological texts. The acceptable distance between the bodies, called the orb, varies according to the planets involved and the astrologer’s method.
Astrological Meaning
A conjunction combines and concentrates the symbolism of the two factors involved. Its expression is not automatically favorable or difficult; much depends on the planets, signs, houses, dignity, and closeness of the aspect. In a natal chart, it describes energies that tend to operate together within the personality or life experience. In transit work, a moving planet conjoining a natal placement may temporarily emphasize that placement’s themes. In synastry, one person’s planet conjunct another person’s placement can indicate a strong point of interaction, though the quality depends on both planets and the wider relationship charts.
Why It Matters
Recognizing Conj as shorthand prevents confusion when reading aspect lists and traditional notation. Because conjunctions often create a prominent concentration of energy, they can become central to chart interpretation, especially when the orb is tight or personal planets and angles are involved. They should still be assessed within the complete chart rather than treated as isolated indicators or fixed predictions.
