Definition

In traditional astrology, a revolution is the completion of a celestial cycle and the chart cast for the moment a planet returns to a significant zodiacal position. The best-known example is the solar revolution, now commonly called the solar return, calculated when the Sun reaches its exact natal longitude each year. Lunar and planetary revolutions can be calculated in the same way.

Astrological Meaning

A revolution chart is interpreted as a time-specific chart for the cycle beginning at that return. In a solar revolution, astrologers study the Ascendant, house placements, planetary aspects, and the condition of the Sun to explore themes for the year ahead. A lunar revolution may describe a shorter monthly cycle, while the return of another planet emphasizes matters associated with that planet. The revolution chart supplements rather than replaces the natal chart; contacts between the two charts often provide essential context.

Why It Matters

Revolutions help astrologers organize interpretation around recurring astronomical cycles. They can identify periods when natal topics may become more prominent, but they do not guarantee particular events. Because calculation methods may vary—especially regarding location and house system—it is useful to state how a revolution chart was cast. Reading it alongside natal placements, transits, and other timing techniques generally produces a more balanced interpretation.
