Pluto
Definition
Pluto is a dwarf planet used in modern Western astrology. Although named after the Roman ruler of the underworld, it was discovered in 1930 and is not one of the seven planets of traditional astrology. Its slow orbit means it remains in each zodiac sign for many years, giving its sign position a broad generational significance.
Astrological Meaning
Astrologically, Pluto is associated with power, elimination, compulsion, secrecy, crisis, regeneration, and profound change. In a natal chart, its house placement may show where a person encounters intense processes of release and renewal. Its aspects to personal planets can make its symbolism more individual and noticeable. Pluto’s sign describes themes shared by a generation, while its house, aspects, and relationship to chart rulers provide more personal context.
Why It Matters
Pluto can help astrologers examine how people respond to forces that feel larger than conscious preference, including struggles over control or the need to outgrow entrenched patterns. It should not be read as a guarantee of catastrophe. A careful interpretation considers the complete natal chart and may frame Pluto as a symbol of psychological depth, resilience, and transformation rather than inevitable loss.
