Definition
In astrology, elections are deliberately chosen dates and times for beginning an activity. The practice is known as electional astrology. Instead of describing a person’s birth, an election chart maps the sky for a proposed moment—such as a wedding, business launch, journey, contract signing, or ceremony—to assess its symbolic suitability.
Astrological Meaning
An astrologer first identifies the nature of the event, then examines the houses and planets associated with it. Important considerations may include the condition of the relevant house ruler, planetary dignity, angularity, major aspects, and the Moon’s sign, phase, and applying aspects. Traditional methods often seek to strengthen the event’s significators while limiting difficult connections where practical. The proposed chart may also be compared with the natal charts of the people involved. Because an ideal chart is rarely available, elections usually involve balancing astrological priorities with realistic scheduling needs.
Why It Matters
Elections offer a structured way to choose timing that reflects the purpose of an undertaking. They do not guarantee success or override preparation, judgment, relationships, or external circumstances. Their value lies in clarifying priorities and selecting a workable beginning with supportive symbolism. A useful election respects both astrological technique and the practical demands of the situation.
