Duad

Definition

A duad is one of twelve equal subdivisions within a zodiac sign. Each duad spans 2 degrees 30 minutes and is associated with a zodiac sign, beginning with the sign being divided and continuing in zodiacal order. Also called a dwad or dwadashamsha, it offers a finer layer of interpretation than the twelve-sign framework alone.

Astrological Meaning

Astrologers use the duad as a secondary tone within a planetary placement. A planet’s main sign describes its fundamental style, while its duad may suggest a subtler way that style is expressed. For example, a planet in an Aries duad of Capricorn remains a Capricorn placement, but its expression may carry additional Aries-like directness or initiative. Duads do not replace the sign, house, aspects, or planetary condition; they refine those larger factors.

Why It Matters

Duads can add nuance when two people have planets in the same sign yet express them differently. They may also help an astrologer examine late-degree distinctions and recurring sign themes in a natal chart. Because each division is small, an accurate planetary degree is important, especially for the Ascendant, Midheaven, or Moon. Duads are best treated as a supplementary technique rather than a stand-alone judgment or prediction.
