Definition

Affinity is a general astrological term for a natural sympathy, resemblance, or ease of connection between signs, planets, houses, or chart themes. It may arise through shared elements, compatible qualities, planetary rulership, or symbolic associations. Unlike an aspect or essential dignity, affinity is not always a precisely measured condition; its meaning depends on the tradition and context in which the term is used.

Astrological Meaning

In chart interpretation, affinity can show where different factors support or readily express one another. For example, Mars has an affinity with assertive action, while Venus is associated with attraction, harmony, and exchange. Signs of the same element often have an elemental affinity, though their different modalities still affect how they operate. A planet may also have an affinity with a house because their topics overlap, but this should not be confused with the traditional system of planetary joys or with modern sign-house correspondences. In synastry, affinity describes compatibility or recognition between two charts rather than guaranteeing a particular relationship outcome.

Why It Matters

Recognizing affinity helps an astrologer connect related symbols without treating them as identical. It can reveal areas of natural cooperation, thematic emphasis, or mutual understanding, while other chart conditions may add tension or complexity.
