Army and Navy Time

Definition

Army and Navy Time is an older name for the 24-hour clock, a system that numbers the hours of a civil day from 00:00 through 23:59. Instead of using a.m. and p.m., it records afternoon and evening hours by continuing the count beyond 12; for example, 7:30 p.m. becomes 19:30.

Astrological Meaning

In astrology, this notation is primarily a practical calculation tool rather than a symbolic factor. It helps clarify recorded birth times, event times, and the timing of transits by removing possible confusion between morning and evening. A 24-hour time must still be interpreted alongside the date, birthplace, time zone, and any daylight-saving or historical clock correction. It should not be mistaken for sidereal time, which is an astronomical measure used in some chart calculations.

Why It Matters

Accurate time notation supports reliable calculation of the Ascendant, Midheaven, house cusps, and other chart factors that can change noticeably during the day. Converting a time incorrectly by twelve hours may produce a substantially different chart. Clear use of Army and Navy Time therefore makes astrological records easier to check, compare, and calculate without adding interpretive meaning of its own.
